Glock began designing pistols in the 1980s and the Austrian military adopted the Glock 17 (so named because it is the company's 17th patent) for use in 1982. The Glock 17 is apparently the first generation pistol and is visually identified by its Smooth, rounded "thick". As important as what's new with the Gen4 is what's not: It's still the solid, reliable pistol feed it's always been. Field disposal is the same as previous generations. Gen4 pistols will fit Gen3 holsters. Additionally, for law enforcement budget watchers, Dutton says Glock will keep law enforcement rates the same as they have been since 2000.
The most important visual differences in the Glock Gen4 pistols and those likely to garner interest from law enforcement and the general shooting public are the interchangeable backstraps and magazine release.
Gen4 Glocks ship with two additional backstraps, each of which fits a "short frame" or standard grip. The distance from the standard backstrap - the "short frame" - to the trigger is 70 mm. Medium and large backgrounds increase the distance to 72mm and 74mm respectively. I tried all three. The short frame felt great, the middle was tolerable, and the big reminded me of the grip feel of a Glock 21 - simply huge. All the grip options have the familiar bell feel but for me the small short frame grip option made the bell more comfortable to hold.

Practically speaking, if you chose the Glock 23 to avoid the long trigger reach of the Glock 22, the Gen4 pistol eliminates that problem.

The backstrap interchangeability on the Glock Gen4 pistol does not affect any of the movement of the pistol, but the large backstrap requires a longer trigger mechanism pin, which comes with every pistol along with a plastic punch tool to remove the trigger mechanism pin. Replacing the backstrap requires a few steps, all described in the included instruction sheet: remove the trigger mechanism pin with a pinch tool, replace the large backstrap, and reinsert the trigger mechanism pin. In replacing the back strap, the big ones proved difficult to seat correctly and the punch tool was a little weak for the job but once installed they stayed in place.
Shooting the Gen4 Glock proved to be a nightmare. Accuracy, reliability and now advanced features make this pistol one step closer to perfection.
Related to the interchangeable backstrap, another notable visual change was the “point pyramids” structure on the frame/grip that replaces the traditional Glock checkering. The Gen4 RTF4 frame, as it's called, doesn't feel as aggressive as the RTF2 military grip, Dutton says. However, it is a different feeling - the pointed pyramids can be described as sharp - but they improved my grip on the bell when shooting.
While the availability of an interchangeable backstrap allows individual shooters to customize a Glock pistol to fit their hand, the new magazine spread on Gen4 pistols could be a significant change.

Glock Gen4 magazine releases are three times larger than previous generations. Coupled with my preferred short frame grip, I found that releasing the magazine during magazine changes was very easy. Although you can reverse the release of the magazine and install it on the other side of the grip (a 30-second operation, according to Glock), I left it in the traditional place. The new release of the magazine works on the axis against the direct immersion of the previous generation. No surprise, the Gen4 release provided the most positive engagement and the least concern of accidental engagement.
Previous generation magazines will work in the Gen4 pistol if the magazine release is to the left; Gen4 magazines will work on previous generation Glocks.
Both the shorter frame and the new magazine release provided a more fulfilling shooting experience because they didn't get in the way of shooting.
While Dutton says scope removal, cleaning and safety instructions remain the same across the Glock lines, some parts of the Glock Gen 4 will not be interchangeable with previous generation parts. It includes the frame, slide, trigger bar, magazine catch, return spring assembly, rear strap assembly, trigger mechanism housing, and trigger mechanism housing pin. The Gen 4 pistol features a new stainless steel, double-wound, two-stage, recoil spring assembly, which Dutton says delivers twice the rated service life of the recoil spring compared to the 2,500-5,000 plus rounds for the Gen 4 G22 Springs. The previous generation Glocks were great to shoot and still great, but the Glock Gen4 was a joy to shoot. Reduced recoil combined with a shorter frame (no bulky backstrap added) makes the grip faster and more accurate shooting. Each round is perfectly fed - reliable - and delivered to the point of aim - accurate. Changes in the journal are easier and therefore more effective - simple. Was it "perfect"? No. According to Dutton, however, the term accurately describes what Glock is trying to do: make the most reliable pistol on earth.

When fired in a Glock 32, like a .357 Sig. I have always wondered about the .357 Sig. I've heard great things about it, such as its ability to shoot a 125-grain bullet out of a semi-auto barrel at over 1300 feet per second, the ballistics of a .357 Magnum (especially when it's a Magnum revolver) four- inch barrel or shorter). Well, I'll have to try... our good family friend Glenn has a nice collection of firearms, and we met at our annual Christmas open house as we have done for the past few years.
